天空之城(Laputa - The Castle in the Sky）是吉卜力工作室的開山之作。1986年作品。

《天空之城》是一部由Jonathan Swift寫的小說《Gulliver's Travels》改編的電影，某些人認為其故事情節較為傳統，但這不等於它沒有新意，相反，《天空之城》一劇充滿了很多新元素。電影中近乎完美地刻畫出故事所發生時代的世界的景觀，有點科幻色彩，也有點神話色彩，還有點歐洲工業革命時期的味道，諸如高架鐵軌上的舊式火車，黑漆漆的礦洞，飛空艇，象泥塑的機器人等等……

緊張激烈的情節貫穿整部電影，但蔚藍的天空和濃濃的白雲反而將尖銳的沖突淡化得更耐人尋味；人物的表達很多時候不是靠台詞而是靠人物的具體動作，使人物的性格更顯深刻。

小姑娘希塔是傳說中「天空之城Laputa」的後裔，那曾是超越地上文明不知幾千年的空中文明，但不知為何，希塔的祖先離開「天空之城」，拋棄發達的科技，在地面上過起隱居的生活。然而一天，幾個不明身份的男子出現在她家門口……

故事由希塔所坐的飛艇遭到空中海盜的襲擊而開始。爭斗中希塔從萬米高空的飛艇上跌落下來…… 故事另外一個主人公少年PASU是礦工機師的徒弟，這一天收工時，發現天上有個亮晶晶的東西正在慢慢地下落。是什麼？UFO？他飛也似的跑過去，發現是一個好可愛的女孩子，在一團藍光的包圍下從天上飄下來了……

第二天希塔在PASU的房間里醒來，發現房裡有一張「天空之城Laputa」的照片。這是PASU的父親冒著生命的危險歷盡艱險才拍到的真正的天空之城，但除了斯威夫特之外，沒有人相信他。於是父親在鬱郁寡歡中去世了。PASU發誓，一定要向他人證實，世上真的有天空之城存在！

然而嗅覺靈敏的海盜很快就找上門來了。接下來就是一段令人眼界大開的追捕與逃跑鏡頭，最後二人在眾目睽睽之下掉入萬丈深的礦井，希塔戴的天空之石又一次發光，令他二人安全飄落。礦井中，天空之石和井下的礦石發生共鳴，原來這里曾是開采天空之石原料的地方，但提煉天空之石的技術，傳說只有Laputa的人才掌握著。

二人剛出礦井，就被軍隊的人抓住了。希塔被帶往要塞，在那裡一個叫穆斯卡的人給希塔看一個巨大的機器人，說是從天空之城掉下來的，憑當時的科技無法令它再啟動。當天晚上，希塔念起祖輩所流傳的尋求幫助的咒語，天空之石發出光，令機器人再次活起來，整個要塞變成火的海洋。

PASU趁亂和海盜達成聯盟飛入要塞救出了希塔。匆忙中希塔丟失了天空之石，而穆斯卡得到了寶石，命軍隊按照寶石上聖光的指引，飛向天空之城。另一方，海盜媽媽從希塔的記述中算出了天空之城的方位，帶著希塔的二人乘海盜飛艇全速前進！

即將到達之時，忽然前方出現龍卷風，和穆斯卡的艦艇又狹路相逢，交戰中PASU和希塔的滑翔機被捲入龍卷風里。

這里是被上帝拋棄的領域，自然的恐怖與眾神的憤怒在這里集結，飛越濃重的黑暗，在縱橫飛嘯的電光中，穿過閃電的迴廊，突破生與死的界限，命運之門再次敞開在少年的面前……龍卷風的中心，正是傳說中的飛鳥「天空之城Laputa」！這兒是寂靜的天堂，只有機器人值守的空中都市，植物和遠古生物的家園。

宮崎駿的作品中，科學技術最好的地方就是沒人居住，在柯南的「未來世界」以及「天空之城Laputa」都是如此。反之，「風之谷」中為生存而奮斗著的人們雖然只有古老的技術，但卻是機器的主人，《天空之城》的飛行海盜們也是這樣。

穆斯卡抓住了海盜們，也來到了Laputa，他迫希塔和他一起進入中央控制室，啟動黑石碑上的文字，即將開始他稱霸世界的野心。希塔搶回天空之石，為了阻止穆斯卡，她和PASU一起念起毀滅一切的咒語：Punish。Laputa解體，邪惡和助紂為虐的武器系統一同化為大氣層的火球墜入海中，而澄清的「天空之石」載著Laputa的生命之樹，上升到天空的盡頭……

《天空之城Laputa》是吉卜力工作室的開山之作，宮崎駿一人兼任了原作、監督、腳本和角色設定四項重任，使得這部作品從頭到章節附註入了純粹的宮崎理念。宮崎駿的音樂搭檔久石讓，這次達到了他配樂生涯的頂峰。片尾曲是 君をのせて 伴隨著你
