初看《象人》的時候，一是自己慣來對黑白色的偏愛，二是沖著導演大衛·林奇（David Lynch）的名字，這次的《象人》，大衛·林奇1980年的處女作，讓我哭了。
象人不是象，象人不是動物，象人是人。這是影片的主題，也是主人公Merrick被逼進絕望的夾角時最後的呼喊，卻尋求不到解救。就像影片緩慢拉開的序幕：一個相框中的美麗女人，一個接下來絕望的可人兒的母親，一群喧囂的大象。伴隨著背景聒噪的喇叭聲，一個女人的身體被象群踩過，踐踏。這個女人，一位母親，這熱帶雨林中荒誕的經歷，故事的起源就用這樣的蒙太奇給抽象帶過。然後是冗長的兩個小時。黑白畫面。伴隨讓人產生自然的生理嫌惡的哮喘聲，變形的身體，醜陋的皮膚，碩大的頭部，唯一能分辨出的清澈的左眼和一隻還是本來面目的左手，醜陋面貌下的美麗聖潔的心靈，夜夜禱告神經的羔羊，被屠殺的羔羊。那就是象人。
象人是無辜的，他像個孩子一樣膽戰心驚，他害怕人們對他的鞭打，對他嘲笑，他害怕窗戶外突然出現的那些不懷好意的人的臉，他害怕哪怕只是一個突然的關門聲，他害怕的不敢說話。他隨身帶著他母親的照片，一位有著天使般面容的女人，然後他又傷心的說：如果我的母親還在，她一定不會想見我，她……會以我為恥，我，我讓她蒙羞了……哪怕那些人只是作態般的接近他，他卻受寵若驚，開心的像個孩子，他會說：那是真的嗎，真的是這樣的嗎？他不敢相信，他以為他一生會真的像一個動物般的在陰暗潮濕的低層度過，伴隨著衰弱的身體，和沉重的哮喘聲。他對窗外教堂的希望，來自於他只想做一個普通人的渴望，可是那教堂就是窗外不遠的地方，那麼近，他看不見，他只能在心裡畫出它的輪廓，運用自己的想像來打造他的理想，一個對於普通人而言不值一提的理想。
我以為這只是大衛·林奇編造出來的借畸形人來嘲諷這個世界的黑色幽默，一部《巴黎聖母院》的延續和再造，用殘酷的軀體面容來歌頌內心的聖潔。當我開始搜尋更多關於象人的資料的時候，我搜尋到了Joseph Merrick的故事。《象人》就是根據Joseph Merrick的真實經歷改變而成。這是讓人震驚並且讓人傷心的一個事實。一百多年前，象人曾經真實存在過。事實上，現實遠比影片所表現的要殘酷，Merrick在死後，其身體一直被倫敦皇家醫院保留，用做實驗，他罕見的病理成為困擾醫學界100多年的難題。而影片中用畸形小矮人的救助和醫生最後的良心發現來表明美好的一面，只是依舊無法挽救象人的死亡。Joseph Merrick曾親手用紙板做了一座教堂，華美易碎。
Joseph Merrick說：「如果不是這樣，或許我能更好的取悅你，取悅這個世界…….如果我能……如果你能用一個人的靈魂來衡量他的價值……影片最後是重回開頭的抽象和虛幻，因為在現實社會中我們並不能得到解答。一個聲音說，那是象人死去的母親，她說：nothing will die。

為了尋找媽媽，西西和塔德四處打聽媽媽凱蒂的消息，他們得知媽媽在延綿遼闊、空曠蒼茫的西部大草原，於是踏上了去大草原的路。在遇到想搶奪大象的壞人的時候，他們帶著大象乘上了去西部的火車。可是路程還沒走到一半，火車失事，塔德和西西因為和大象坐在火車最後一節車廂，幸運地活了下來。他們現在只能徒步到遙遠的大草原。
他們經歷了千難萬險，都快要絕望時，遇到一位好心的大爺，大爺一輩子也沒有見過大象！他驚奇他們的遭遇，得知有人想要霸佔他們的大象時，大爺送給了他們一條木船，還給大象庫什搭了房子在木船上以便讓它隱藏起來。他們劃著木船從密西西比河前往俄亥俄州。在數天的航行中，木船被河裡的水流沖刷，大象也按耐不住，暴露在人們的視線中，最終脆弱的木船在頃刻間坍塌，追趕他們的壞人再度發現大象。窮凶極惡的壞人一路追趕並製造假的文書！但這一切都沒有嚇到塔德和西西，他們在善良的人們那裡據理力爭，還原事情的真相，再次得到族長的幫助，繼續前往西部草原！
終於他們來到了大草原，他們找到了他們的媽媽，雖然媽媽滿臉皺紋，皮膚黝黑，但是有了媽媽的保護一切的困難和邪惡都不可怕，他們成功擊退了壞人的陰謀！
讀完這本書後，我對兩個主人翁的聰明才智佩服得五體投地，他們有著堅持不懈、永不退縮的精神！在遇到困難時從未想過放棄或拋棄對方，兩人一起合作與壞人鬥智斗勇，他們這種團結向上的精神，值得我們每一個人學習！
