Eight Below

I went begrudgingly to see this film with my daughter. It was not on my list of films to see but she insisted. Knowing that it was a Disney proct only made me dread it more. The schlock they try to pass off as good films these days is ridiculous. The only up-side I could see was the director, Frank Marshall. He has proced some of my favorite films. Let's see what he can do behind the camera.

Pleasantly surprised I think is a good term for my reaction. Although the film was about 20 minutes too long, it did sustain the action and drama all the way through. I knew the basics of the story: a team at a base in Antartica must evacuate and cannot take the sled dogs with them. Winter sets in and the dogs are forced to survive on their own in the brutal cold for months.

The dogs are very entertaining and their scenes with the science team are warm and amusing, even thrilling. Where I expected the film to fail was after the humans and dogs separate. Amazingly though, this is where the Mr. Marshall seemed to kick it into gear. Watching the opposing scenes unfold of the guilt-ridden Paul Walker frantically trying to find anyone to help him get back down to the Antartic, interlaced with the Huskies who are struggling through the rough winter, scrounging for food and defending each other from predators, was very emotional.

While the film is a grade A survival pic, I hadn't expected it to be such a tear-jerker. Be forewarned. Although the human performances (Paul Walker, Bruce Greenwood and the necessary romantic lead, Moon Bloodgood) were mediocre at best, the canine actors really do steal your heart.

No Oscar material here, but as far as family films go these days, this one is above par. Grade: B

Shrek

Shrek is a movie like no other. It stands alone in its appeal to people of all ages and in its presentation of comedy, romance, and creative story line. Shrek is a delightful comedy about a crude ogre, an energetic princess, a witty donkey and an uptight ruler. The movie has a brilliant story line, following the path of an initially moody ogre as he discovers friendship and love all in the face of hysterical comedy. The story line is layered for different levels of understanding; it is an enjoyable film for people of all ages. One clever tool Shrek uses to humor the audience is its spoof on other fairy tales. In one scene, Princess Fiona's singing causes a bluebird to explode. And in another scene, the Magic Mirror's description of Snow White is "She may live with seven men, but don't be fooled, she's not easy." While these subtle comedic lines amuse alts, it is the simple humor, such as the movie opening with the ogre sitting in a swamp "farting," that amuses children. The amazing cast of Shrek, including Eddie Murphy and Mike Myers does a great job of living up to their comedic expectations. Shrek has something for everyone; it is a great animated tale that is wonderful for alts and children alike.

可是，飛機沒有能再次回到基地。同樣還是那個道理：有些事情很難改變。比如說，當人類決定是否去做一件事情時，會權衡利弊，而不會意氣用事不顧一切。因為罕見的惡劣天氣，南極科考隊總部取消了一切任務，拒絕出動飛機冒險去救8隻狗，理由很簡單：救人還來不及呢！
與雪橇犬朝夕相處的主人傑里很難接受這個事實，他四處奔波，試圖說服上級雪橇犬是科考隊的成員，可還是無法改變什麼。他還想到另闢蹊徑，請求那位博士撥出部分科研款項幫助他再次回到南極，他以為博士會顧念雪橇犬的救命之恩，可他最後一絲希望也破滅了。博士告訴他科研款項不能浪費在不切實際的事情上，還勸慰他接受現實。整個世界都跟傑里作對，他只能放棄了，把自己放逐到麻木的工作中去——人畢竟還是要面對現實。
可是那些可愛的雪橇犬的身影還是無法從心中抹去，傑里坐卧不安，陷入消沉。於是他去拜訪了最早養育這些雪橇犬的老人，在那兒聽到的一個故事改變了他。故事講的是一個人帶著他的4條愛犬進森林捕獵，不幸受到一隻黑熊的襲擊。當那人從昏迷中醒來時，發現有2隻狗為了保護他而犧牲了，黑熊和另2隻狗卻不見蹤影。那人恢復後開始四處尋找另外那2隻狗，找了很久。有人勸他放棄，告訴他那已經沒有什麼意義了。可他仍然堅持，哪怕愛犬已經死去，他也要找到它們，因為唯有這樣他才能求得內心的平靜。聽完這個故事後，傑里終於知道怎樣才能使自己的內心真正獲得平靜。他決定立即返回南極，靠自己的力量！無論多麼困難，這世上總有些東西值得他不顧一切地去做。
當傑里破除萬難回到基地，與6隻存活下來的雪橇犬重逢時，那個場面讓我激動得熱淚盈眶，幾乎想要歡呼。要知道，那時雪橇犬在零下8度的暴風雪中已經獨立生存了整整180天！180天，在沙漠般死寂的雪原，它們並肩戰斗，從未失去對生的渴望，並且仍然相信主人會回來。讓人慶幸的是，6條雪橇犬終於等到了那一刻；讓人難受的是，有2位那樣可愛的夥伴永遠留在了那裡。在死亡的威脅下，那些雪橇犬表現得那樣勇敢那樣堅強那樣團結，難以用言語和文字表達，只有看過電影的人才有切身的感受，那就是：恨不得立刻插上翅膀去極地解救它們！

"A BRACING BLAST OF PUPPY POWER"

Resembling a canine spin on Marshall's 1993 Alive, Eight Below delivers a bracing blast of puppy power that helps dispel the lingering stink from Disney's 2002 Snow Dogs. The problem lies solely with its two-legged contingent, to whom scripter David DiGilio continually returns just when the canine capers are at their most exciting. Walker's simpering romance with pilot Moon Bloodgood gobbles up valuable screen time to little effect, while Jason Biggs merely irritates as a wisecracking cartographer. Gurning and griping for all he's worth, he's the only character here truly in need of a muzzle.
