小說的第一篇寫了華生從阿富汗戰場歸來，因為合租房子認識了福爾摩斯。就在兩個人的第一次見面時，福爾摩斯就迅速地推理出了華生曾經在阿富汗戰場待過。這令華生大為驚嘆。隨著劇情的發展，當福爾摩斯說明出了他推理的全過程時，不僅只是華生，我也被他的推理能力所折服了。在沒有一絲線索和背景的情況下，只見過第一面，憑著一眼的印象和觀察，在短短的時間內就得到了結果。這可真是一個吸引人的開篇！他迫使我不得不接著看下去。

在小說的任何一個案件中，作者都會布置一個詭異的故事或現場。但是隨著福爾摩斯的分析，這個故事或現場就慢慢地被細化，然後既清晰，又模糊地描述出福爾摩斯的推理。但所有都在情理之中，卻又在意料之外。每一條線索都來地自然，流暢，我根本無法找出絲毫破綻。於是我驚嘆於福爾摩斯驚人的推理能力。

屎殼郎深感不快，覺來得受源到侮辱。從此以後，他便不斷地盯著鷹巢，只要鷹生了蛋，他就把鷹蛋從巢里推下去。鷹無可奈何，只好四處躲避。後來，鷹飛到宙斯那裡，請求給它一個安全的地方生兒育女。宙斯答應讓他在自己的膝上來生。屎殼郎知道後，就滾了一個大糞團，飛到宙斯的上面，把糞團扔到他膝上。宙斯立刻起身抖掉糞團，無意間把鷹的蛋都砸了下來。據說，從那兒以後，屎殼郎出現的時節，鷹就不孵小鷹了。

故事背景來到了1895年的維多利亞時代，有別於電視劇所處的現代時空，沒有手機，沒有電腦，沒有飛機，出門坐馬車，跨海靠輪渡。「這是最好的時代，這是最壞的時代」，狄更斯的名言用來描述這一時代可謂再合適不過了，當時正值英國工業革命和大英帝國的巔峰時期，與此同時整個社會貧富不均，婦女沒有社會地位（影片當中透出的濃濃女權味道也正源於此），開膛手傑克等恐怖兇殺案層出不窮。雖然英倫的天氣總是陰郁不開，但那個時代的街道、建築、服飾、道具以及談吐，都令人心動不已，好評！
於是，在這個時代，我們看到了一頭直發的「卷福」和兩撇鬍子的「花生」。據聞，當本尼聽說故事發生在維多利亞時代後，首先問編劇的是自己可不可以剪頭發了，可見他對那一頭捲毛實在怨念頗深啊！然並卵，人並木有因此變直，你們懂的！有了鬍子的花生顯得蒼老不少，好在注視直福時的小眼神還是辣么有愛。哈德森太太抱怨沒有台詞直戳笑點，瑪麗的古典扮相很有味道，茉莉的男裝造型頗為亮眼，但最令人大跌眼鏡的是，電視劇里苗條挺拔的麥哥，在電影里胖成了一個球，一個球，個球，球……
電影的副標題是「可惡的新娘」，講述的是在維多利亞時期，一位名為艾米麗婭·瑞克萊蒂的女性在自殺死後又離奇殺死自己丈夫，並在當時引起眾多女性效仿的故事。新娘的妝容很是駭人，加上案件的撲朔迷離，將哥特風格的驚悚氛圍營造得非常到位。說到底，新娘殺人事件是為女權的主題服務的，「新娘們」這一支隊伍象徵著英國慢慢覺醒的女性維權意識。那個時代的婦女們，婚後完全淪為丈夫的附庸，既沒有選舉權，也無法參與到很多工作崗位中去。而導演借麥哥之口說出「我們不會打敗他們。我們幾乎絕對要輸給她們。因為她們是正確的，我們是錯誤的」之類的話，可以看出劇組為了面向更加主流人群的努力。
