小说的第一篇写了华生从阿富汗战场归来，因为合租房子认识了福尔摩斯。就在两个人的第一次见面时，福尔摩斯就迅速地推理出了华生曾经在阿富汗战场待过。这令华生大为惊叹。随着剧情的发展，当福尔摩斯说明出了他推理的全过程时，不仅只是华生，我也被他的推理能力所折服了。在没有一丝线索和背景的情况下，只见过第一面，凭着一眼的印象和观察，在短短的时间内就得到了结果。这可真是一个吸引人的开篇！他迫使我不得不接着看下去。

在小说的任何一个案件中，作者都会布置一个诡异的故事或现场。但是随着福尔摩斯的分析，这个故事或现场就慢慢地被细化，然后既清晰，又模糊地描述出福尔摩斯的推理。但所有都在情理之中，却又在意料之外。每一条线索都来地自然，流畅，我根本无法找出丝毫破绽。于是我惊叹于福尔摩斯惊人的推理能力。

相较于电视剧版，电影版多了20分钟的独家花絮。当影院里全场暗下来时，呈现在大荧幕上的却是编剧魔法特带领观众参观221B的房间场景，说实话，急于想看正片的我一开始是拒绝的！但随着他的视角看下去，从壁纸到房间功能设置，种种道具细节点高度还原了维多利亚时代，制作之精良叫人拍手称奇。
故事背景来到了1895年的维多利亚时代，有别于电视剧所处的现代时空，没有手机，没有电脑，没有飞机，出门坐马车，跨海靠轮渡。“这是最好的时代，这是最坏的时代”，狄更斯的名言用来描述这一时代可谓再合适不过了，当时正值英国工业革命和大英帝国的巅峰时期，与此同时整个社会贫富不均，妇女没有社会地位（影片当中透出的浓浓女权味道也正源于此），开膛手杰克等恐怖凶杀案层出不穷。虽然英伦的天气总是阴郁不开，但那个时代的街道、建筑、服饰、道具以及谈吐，都令人心动不已，好评！
于是，在这个时代，我们看到了一头直发的“卷福”和两撇胡子的“花生”。据闻，当本尼听说故事发生在维多利亚时代后，首先问编剧的是自己可不可以剪头发了，可见他对那一头卷毛实在怨念颇深啊！然并卵，人并木有因此变直，你们懂的！有了胡子的花生显得苍老不少，好在注视直福时的小眼神还是辣么有爱。哈德森太太抱怨没有台词直戳笑点，玛丽的古典扮相很有味道，茉莉的男装造型颇为亮眼，但最令人大跌眼镜的是，电视剧里苗条挺拔的麦哥，在电影里胖成了一个球，一个球，个球，球……
电影的副标题是“可恶的新娘”，讲述的是在维多利亚时期，一位名为艾米丽娅·瑞克莱蒂的女性在自杀死后又离奇杀死自己丈夫，并在当时引起众多女性效仿的故事。新娘的妆容很是骇人，加上案件的扑朔迷离，将哥特风格的惊悚氛围营造得非常到位。说到底，新娘杀人事件是为女权的主题服务的，“新娘们”这一支队伍象征着英国慢慢觉醒的女性维权意识。那个时代的妇女们，婚后完全沦为丈夫的附庸，既没有选举权，也无法参与到很多工作岗位中去。而导演借麦哥之口说出“我们不会打败他们。我们几乎绝对要输给她们。因为她们是正确的，我们是错误的”之类的话，可以看出剧组为了面向更加主流人群的努力。
